Alison Hofley

Alison is a teacher, tutor and coach with 8 years of instructional experience under her belt. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in English and a B.A. in Communications, Alison moved to Chicago to try her hand at sales. While a part of the corporate grind she couldn’t ignore her mother’s voice in her head saying “Alison, you would make a great teacher.” Since mother knows best, Alison applied to DePaul University and, once accepted, pursued her M.A. in English Literature. Her calling as an educator became clearer every day. After receiving her degree with Distinction, she then pursued an M.A. in Education, knowing that the combination would provide a solid understanding of communicating the importance of literature and writing in all areas of a student’s life.

Alison began her teaching career at the college level, instructing adult students in the basics of writing at Robert Morris College in downtown Chicago. An opportunity came to her for a teaching position at an inner-city school and Alison taught all grade levels at John Marshall High on Chicago’s west side, gaining experience with at-risk kids in an inclusive classroom.

After 7 years in the city, Alison decided to move back to Michigan to be closer to her growing family. To her great surprise, a position as on-site tutor and full-time substitute became available at her alma mater, Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills. Now in her fourth year of tutoring and substituting Alison has decided to share her expertise with the on-line community of students preparing to attend college. Working closely with students on ACT and SAT prep, along with helping them achieve success in the core academic classes, is her bread and butter. She has also been using her communications degree in the field of radio producing, working with a local company to create an informational show for entrepreneurs seeking guidance in starting up a business.

Alison is available to answer your questions about the SAT, the ACT and how to write a powerful essay on the SAT and for your college admissions portfolio.
